Agile Coach / Scrum Master
Apple is where I first learned about being Agile. We implemented Scrum not only with software development projects, but creating training and development in our learning environment. We had cross functional team members which included instructional designers, graphic and 3D artists and special SME’s would give us great insight.
I was a part of Apple’s Worldwide Marketing Communications organization (Marcom) as a Project Manager / Scrum Master which demonstrated ScrumMaster skills to help lead the development of tools used internally by our global teams. As Scrum Master I had a strategic vision and used a tool for enhancement from the product manager and then worked with the product manager, Ruby on Rails engineering team, and product owners to make the strategy into reality. I lead story writing workshops (requirements gathering), and sprint planning (functional and technical design discussions), and also participated in demoing (testing the proof-of-concept), working with business partners, and more. This role required strategic thinking around team needs and organizational goals and was not a solely tactical role. I was responsible for successful outcomes and delivery of usable software. I prioritized and worked on multiple highly detailed projects at the same time.
I worked on iLearn Modules Project and the scope was creating “Lead Learning Out” for our Genius and Creative Trainers in our Apple Retail Stores. I was Scrum Master for 21 teams, as coach, I facilitated the transition of the division (90+ people) from waterfall to Agile while also acting as the Scrum Master of 3 mixed on/off shore teams. A primary focus was training the teams how to write good stories, order the work based on business value and how teams handle tasking. Likewise, substantial efforts were placed on role training, time-boxing and providing strong/live metrics for all players. Additional benefits were realized as code standards/reviews, automation, design patterns and other Agile/SDLC process were brought into play; these changes improved velocity by over 200%. Apple is truly Agile!
